  5. INTRODUCTION
  6. ------------

  8. PICTURES ABC is a children's education program running under Microsoft 
  9. Windows 3.0.  It is designed for children from 2 to 6.  The purpose of 
  10. the program is to teach children the association between alphabets and 
  11. words through the usage of pictures and voice.
  12.  
  13. PICTURES ABC currently has two updated versions.  Version 0.5 is the
  14. final version for shareware distribution.  It has all the basic features
  15. of the program, and it only contains the animal category.  Version 2.0 is
  16. the final registered version.  It has all of the basic features of Version
  17. 0.5 plus enhanced capabilities such as Soundblaster support, shrinkable
  18. screen, and expandable categories.  In addition, Version 2.0 includes four 
  19. categories: animal, food, people, and things.

  21. PICTURES ABC Version 0.5 should give you a taste of how you can teach and 
  22. enjoy this program with your children.  If you find it to be a fun and 
  23. effective teaching tool, we recommend you to register for Version 2.0.  
  24. You will have more fun with the additional three categories and enhanced 
  25. capabilities.

  28. your friends provided you do not alter the contents of this program.
  29. Only PICTURES ABC version 0.5 can be treated as public domain software.
  30. You may not distribute PICTURES ABC registered version 2.0.

  35. The distribution version of PICTURES ABC contains the following files

  39.         DOVOICE.DLL -  PC speaker sound DLL
  40.         A.SPK       -  PC speaker voice file
  41.  
  42. All of the above files should be located in the same sub-directory for 
  43. the program to operate properly.

  45. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  46. -------------------

  48. Since PICTURES ABC operates under Microsoft Windows 3.0 environment,
  49. the following system configuration is recommended for PICTURES ABC
  50. to run effectively.
  51.  
  52.     - PC/AT 286, 386, 486, or better computer operating
  53.       at speed greater than 10 MHz
  54.  
  55.     - Microsoft Windows 3.0 or later operating environment
  56.  
  57.     - Mouse pointing device
  58.  
  59.     - EGA, VGA, and XGA display system
  60.  
  61. INSTALLATION
  62. ------------
  63.  
  64. To install PICTURES ABC, just copy the files stated in the FILE LIST 
  65. paragraph above into a sub-directory of your choice.  Then, you should
  66. activate the Microsoft Windows 3.0 environment.  Next, select the 
  67. "RUN" option under the "file" menu item of your Windows 3.0 Program 
  68. Manager.  This will result a dialog box appears on your screen.  Under
  69. the "Command Line" input, type in the directory path of PICTURES ABC 
  70. and PICABC.EXE to execute the program.
  71.  
  72. If you want to permanently install PICTURES ABC in your Program 
  73. Manager, please refer to Windows 3.0 User's manual for the procedures
  74. to adding icons within Program Manager.
  75.  
  76. PROGRAM OPERATION
  77. -----------------

  79. Upon activating PICTURES ABC,  it will undergo an initialization process 
  80. for a period of 15 seconds.  During this time, a message box will be 
  81. displayed on the screen, and the mouse will be disabled.  When the mouse 
  82. is re-enabled, you may click on the "OK" bottom to enter the main program.

  84. After initialization, PICTURES ABC displays the twenty six alphabets with 
  85. four selection categories.  The categories are:  animals, foods, people, 
  86. and things.  Each category is identified by a graphic symbol displayed in 
  87. the blue rectangular area.  The default category is animals.  You may 
  88. select the category by clicking the mouse on the category symbol, or use 
  89. the left and right arrow keys to high-lite the desired category symbol.  
  90. However, only the animals category contains pictures and voice in the
  91. distribution version.

  93. After the selection has been made, you may start to enter any one of the
  94. twenty six alphabets.  This can be done by either pressing the letters on 
  95. the keyboard or using the mouse to click on the alphabet button displayed 
  96. on the screen.  When an alphabet is entered, a picture will come up with 
  97. the word associated with the alphabet written on top of the picture.  As
  98. the picture appears on the screen, the PC speaker will generate the voice 
  99. to pronounce the word.  Entering any other alphabet will cause a new 
  100. picture to appear and the old picture to disappear.  Clicking on the 
  101. picture or pressing any non alphabetic key will make the current picture 
  102. disappear.  This process may be repeated until you wish to terminate the 
  103. program.

  105. For the ABC PICTURES distribution version, only the animal category 
  106. generate pictures and voice.  All other will generate registration 
  107. messages.
  108.  
  109. ENHANCED CAPABILITIES
  110. ---------------------
  111.  
  112. PICTURES ABC Version 2.0 contains three major enhanced capabilities.  
  113. They are:
  114.  
  115. 1) SoundBlaster Support - PICTURES ABC Version 2.0 will automatically
  116.    detect the presence of Soundblaster card. If it exists, the program
  117.    will use it to generate voice which produce better sound.  Otherwise, 
  118.    the program will default to PC speaker to generate voice.
  119.  
  120. 2) Shrinkable Screen - PICTURES ABC Version 2.0 can reconfigure its main
  121.    display window to fit a new size selected by the user.  After the 
  122.    program established its new size and location within the Windows'
  123.    environment, all the popup pictures will be displayed according to 
  124.    the new program configuration.  The minimum size for PICTURES ABC
  125.    main window is 320 X 240 pixels.  With this new capability, you can
  126.    share the computer screen with your kids.

  128. 3) Expandable categories - PICTURES ABC Version 2.0 is capable of 
  129.    incorporating additional categories to the basic four categories 
  130.    included with the main program.  It has the capacities to handle
  131.    up to 30 different categories.  If you like to have your child 
  132.    learning a particular category of words, we welcome your suggestion.  
  133.    Just put the category name and words associate with the category in 
  134.    the registration form, we will consider it in the expansion kit for 
  135.    PICTURES ABC.

  137. Also, if you have other ideas and suggestion to PICTURES ABC, we also
  138. like to hear it.  Again, please write them down in the registration
  139. form, and we will consider it as future enhancement of PICTURES ABC.

  141. LICENSE AGREEMENT

  144. The distribution version of PICTURES ABC is a freeware.  It serves as 
  145. a demonstration for the registered version of PICTURES ABC.  However, 
  146. it is copyrighted material, and it is protected by the copyright laws
  147. of the United States.  You may not alter, decompile, nor disassemble
  148. the program for any purpose.

  151. with your friends.
